'Life on the Rocks' is a modern day bonsai (of an Umbrella Plant) but so much easier to look after. As the name suggests it's a plant living on a rock. The roots grow over the rock taking on a gnarled bonsai appearance that improves with age. There is no potting mix used and when the dish is filled with water the volcanic rock absorbs the moisture making it available to the plant roots. Moss will also grow on the rock, further adding to its bonsai appearance.
To ensure a long healthy life we recommend that you -
Keep the pebbles wet
Add some liquid fertiliser once a fortnight to the water. We use We the Wild 'Grow'.
If the Umbrella Plant becomes too big, trim back the stems, leaving a few leaves (it will grow back quickly)
A white fungus (which is harmless) may sometimes grow on the lava rock, particularly in air conditioned spaces. This is easily removed with luke warm water and a soft brush (after removing the pebbles)
The best position is part shade to bright indirect light
